 Cultural Performers

Sol Development

Sol Development is a California native hip hop jazz soul collective of teachers and freedom fighters that blend imaginative musicians with virtuoso vocalists and a master MC. Sol Development, standing for a source of light, mirrors Nina Simone’s culpable quote with content that illuminates the broader socio-cultural political context matched with a sound that allows one to feel the social injustices and find their own activism and healing.

Aliza Hava

Aliza Hava is an award-winning singer/songwriter and leader of the Bay Area folk-rock project, *Eve of Eden*.  Her songs emphasize the power of music as a tool for social change and have been featured on compilations with songwriting luminaries such as Jackson Browne and Lucinda Williams, as well as in Sharon Stone’s award-winning documentary, *FEMME: Women Healing the World*.  A lifelong activist, Hava’s extensive work with musicians for peace in the Middle East earned her a Human Spirit Award from the international NGO, *Talent for Humanity*.  Her newly released Eve of Eden EP, *Songs for Social Change*, features the singles *Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.*, *Water to Fire, (*a song for Standing Rock), and *I Vote!*, a collaboration with NYC-based hip-hop artist, Spiritchild.

The newest member of the Sol Life record label, The Philharmonik brings a revitalizing sense of urgency and musical depth to the shallows of the current mainstream Hip Hop landscape.Already capturing the eye of West Coast music lovers and critics alike, the 23 year old phenom is currently working on the follow-up to the contemplative and soulful self produced Good People. The first singles off the currently untitled project, “Energy,” “Stay Woke,” and “Serenity” run the gamut from soulful R&B/Trip Hop to Bass heavy trap styles and Future House. Talented and versatile, passionate and personal, The Philharmonik is a refreshingly creative force whether singing, rapping, producing, playing keys, or engineering a session.

Brian Chris Rogers

Brian Chris Rogers is an amazing vocalist, ace bass player, powerful drummer, and percussive guitarist. He opened for Senator Bernie Sanders three times across Northern California, as a duo with violinist and fellow looper, Joe Kye. Brian has opened for Yo-yo Ma at the Mondavi Center, appeared on MTV’s Laguna Beach, performed at High Sierra Music Festival, and the Kaboo Festival in San Diego featuring Ben Harper, Michael Franti, Zak Brown Band, The Roots, Counting Crows, and No Doubt. Brian creates his own genre, in which he pushes the limits, and balances the best traits in any artist with vocals and style hybrids reminiscent of Ben Harper, Amos Lee, Dave Matthews, and Victor Wooten.

Jacob Golden

After years in London, Sacramento's Jacob Golden made his stateside debut with 2016's The Invisible Record. It’s a gorgeous album, full of emotional storytelling and poetic imagery. His voice soars, haunts and dominates sparse, at times quiet, instrumentation. Yet all the while, the act of recording is apparent, fluidly changing between and within each song. That’s kind of Golden’s thing: he records in different spaces, looking for cool tones and sonic atmospheres. Sometimes, he re-records songs over and over again until he finds the one that feels right. It’s tricky, because he plays with dynamics when he performs live as well. He gets lost in his songs, never singing them the same way twice.

Mary Youngblood

Native American Mary Youngblood, half Seminole and half Aleut, is the first woman to professionally record the Native American Flute, and the first woman to win not just one, but two Grammy Awards for "Best Native American Music Album".

About her second Grammy Award, Silver Wave Records said, "...Mary Youngblood has always had the talent to stand out above the crowd, and with this honor she stakes her claim as the number one star of Native American music."

Hannah Mayree is a Sacramento-born multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, composer and works in communities nationwide to bring and share healing through music, nature and our relationships with one another. Often capturing a fleeting moment in time, Hannah Mayree released their debut album "Thoughts of the Night," early this year.

The College Fund Street Band is comprised of Theodore “Mario” Fong (16), Leland Fong (13), and Jennifer Fong (10). Their unique blend of vocals, ukulele, and percussion has attracted a large and loyal following. The kids perform throughout Northern California and have played at the Dodgers Stadium in L.A., AT&T Park in San Francisco, and the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. Two other siblings Maxwell and Nina, both in college, sometimes join them. All the money they earn goes into their college fund, hence the band’s name.

Sacramento Area Youth Speaks

Founded in 2009 by Dr. Vajra Watson, Sacramento Area Youth Speaks (SAYS) is an innovative movement that forges pathways between the community and college to radically transform education. Through year-round programming, SAYS breaks the chains of underachievement by elevating the voices of young people and creating spaces for students to become authors of their own lives and agents of change.

Joey Garcia

Since 1996, Joey Garcia has written “Ask Joey,” a relationship advice column reaching 300,000 weekly readers in the *Sacramento News & Review*. She’s also the Relationship Expert for Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto Fox 40 News.
